The 8×8 Default Resource Pack is perfect for Minecraft players who really love the game, yet don’t have a computer capable of playing it without choppy framerates and lots of hardware lag. It might sound kind of surprising, but despite the blocky and basic look and feel of Minecraft, there’s a lot going on while the game is being played. It’s kind of complicated, and because of that it takes a good deal of system resources to render chunks, work lightmaps and run other aspects of the game. There’s a lot more to Minecraft than most people realize.
Those who do realize it are the ones with computers that can’t handle running the game, even when using default textures and keeping the graphics settings turned down to a minimum. If that sounds like you, then you’ll probably really enjoy the 8×8 Default Resource Pack. It retains the look and feel of Minecraft while significantly reducing the amount of work your computer needs to do to run the game. Because the textures are essentially half as good in terms of resolution, your computer will only need to work about half as much to render them.
While the textures do admittedly look even more bland and flat than normal, that’s the tradeoff you make for improved performance. That’s how graphics have always worked in computer games, and Minecraft isn’t any different. If you’re having a difficult time playing the game with a decent number of frames per second right now, a resource pack like the 8×8 Default Texture Pack could be one of the cheapest answers available to you – so cheap it’s free, in fact. But if you already have a decent computer, this is absolutely a step down from vanilla Minecraft graphics, so you’ll probably just want to skip it.
