The Area 51 Horror Map is one of those custom maps which are specially designed to work together with a specific resource pack. This is because many of the features in the map look foreign or alien, like from somewhere out of this world, but none of the textures in vanilla Minecraft really fit that motif. You could play without the pack, but that would really be doing a disservice to this piece of work. Though it only lasts for about 30 minutes for skilled players, the use of puzzles, hostile mobs and horror elements makes it a short but scary ride.
Because it is a horror-themed map, you will definitely want to turn your render distance down to 2 chunks – the bare minimum allowed by Minecraft. This will prevent you from seeing further than about 32 blocks in any given direction, which will really help to improve the fear factor of the map. It’s possible to play the map on Peaceful if you just want the scares, but Adventure mode is recommended to add the chance of dying a gruesome death. Evenly placed checkpoints allow the player to jump right back into the Area 51 Horror Map without starting over from the beginning, and that’s pretty nice.
