This mod adds a total of more than 200 butterfly mobs to Minecraft, each of which can be caught, catalogued and used to create pictures which you can hang from your walls – or set free within an enclosed space to make a sort of butterfly house, like you might see at a zoo. There are dozens of different shapes, sizes and color combinations for you to find, and there are even some butterflies which have multiple unique looks for the same butterfly.

Butterflies must be caught using a net, which can be crafted with a simple recipe utilizing sticks and string. Once you have that you can snag as many as you can find. A logbook will allow you to research individual butterflies and keep tabs on them with information right at your fingertips. To catch every kind of butterfly though you will need to learn about their habits and figure out the best way to lure them close. Some of them only come out at night for example, while others will dance around glowstone regardless of the time of day. What it really comes down to is the biome.

In the Butterfly Mania mod, every biome except the frozen ones will have some sort of butterfly in it. The jungle biome is the most populous type for butterflies, and that would make a great place to start your collection if you’re really trying to catch them all. Butterflies will flit around, stop at flowers to feed, run away from players and even disturb each other if they move too close. They look and feel like a natural addition to the game and for that, this mod gets good marks.

1. Download the mod
