The name of the Exotic Birds mod alone should be enough to explain its purpose. It has basically been designed for players who have had too much of the ordinary Minecraft animals and are looking for a change of pace and, of course, some extra variety. The best part about this mod is that it doesn’t restrict itself with ‘reality’. Alongside the actual real-world birds, the Exotic Birds mod also implements the Phoenix, which is a magnificent mythical creature that you’ll absolutely love having in your Minecraft world. The mod’s been out for a while and ever since then, it has seen constant patches and updates to make sure that it’s up to date and functioning well at all times.

The best thing about the Exotic Birds mod is, of course, its variety. It adds tons of expertly crafted birds to the game and what’s most impressive about is the fact that every single bird has its own special characteristics and stats. For example, the Cassowary, which has a health of 10 hearts and is usually found in the forest. This creature is pretty passive and usually minds its own business but can definitely go hostile if you attack it. Similar to this, all birds have their own special characteristics that distinguish them from the others.

The highlight of this mod is definitely the Phoenix, though. These creatures don’t spawn like the normal birds implemented by this mod, instead, they’re hatched out of eggs, and even the eggs have various special conditions that need to be met in order to complete a successful hatch. You can even use the Phoenix as a mount and explore the entire game world from a whole new perspective. They’re kind of immortal as well since every Phoenix drops an egg upon death that can be used to hatch it once again.

  • After installing the mod, you’ll encounter various types of birds scattered throughout the Minecraft world.

  • Blue Jay
  • Blue-footed Booby
  • Budgie
  • Cardinal

Eggs

  • Each bird in the mod has its own unique egg that spawns periodically in the Minecraft world.
  • These eggs have a base hatching success rate of 30%.
All Eggs

However, there are two ways to improve the chances of hatching:

  1. By combining the egg with blaze powder, the spawn rate increases by 15% (10% in version 1.14+).
  2. An egg incubator can be utilized to enhance the success rate by 5% (10% in version 1.14+) for multiple eggs simultaneously.

Nests

  • Nests are interactive blocks that serve as storage for eggs and eggshells.

    Nest Block
  • They can be right-clicked to access their inventory.

    Nest Inventory
  • Nests naturally generate in various locations, commonly found on tree tops. These nests may contain bird eggs and occasionally unidentified eggs.
  • Nests can also be crafted and, if birds are nearby, will gradually accumulate eggs over time.

    Nest Recipe
  • Breaking a nest will drop 2-3 sticks and any eggs that are inside. If the nest is broken with a silk touch, the nest item will drop, as well as any eggs that are inside.

Note

Nests are not used for egg incubation; instead, an egg incubator is required for that purpose.

Bird Encyclopedia

  • The mod includes a comprehensive bird encyclopedia providing detailed information about the birds it adds. You can search for specific birds using the search bar or browse through the list. Each entry showcases a model of the bird and provides data such as its favorite food, habitat, and gender. The encyclopedia also lists the different items that can be used to tempt, breed, and tame the birds (if possible).
  • Use this book as a guide to discover and learn about all the fascinating birds present in your Minecraft world.

Craft the encyclopedia by surrounding a book with feathers.

Birdcages

  • Birdcages are a new addition available in version 1.12.2+ of the mod. They enable the transportation of birds over long distances and come in eight different types. These blocks not only serve a practical purpose but also enhance the aesthetic appeal of your worlds.
  • A birdcage can be broken easily by hand. If the birdcage is full, breaking the cage will release the bird. To pick up a cage with the bird inside, the player must crouch as they break it.
  • Metal birdcages can be broken slightly quicker with a pickaxe. They will still drop the mobs and cages if broken by hand.
All Cages

To use birdcages:

  1. Right-click on a bird to capture it inside the cage.
  2. Birds can be released by placing and breaking the cage.
  3. To keep the bird inside the cage, crouch and break the cage.

Egg Identifier (Analyser)

  • The egg identifier allows you to analyze unidentified eggs found in nests.
  • Place the unidentified eggs in the top left slot and the redstone dust in the slot below it.

    Egg Analyser
  • The eggs will undergo a gradual identification process and may transform into ANY bird egg, including the mystical phoenix egg.

Note

There is always a chance of failure during the egg analysis. If that happens, the process may only yield eggshells or, in some cases, nothing at all.

Egg Incubator

  • The egg incubator is used to increase the hatching chance of bird eggs.
  • Simply place bird eggs on the top of the incubator and power the machine with blaze powder.
  • The incubator will gently warm the eggs, ensuring a 100% chance of hatching.

In addition to using the dedicated egg incubator, eggs can also be incubated by combining them with blaze powder in a crafting grid.

  • Each blaze powder used will contribute a 10% spawn chance to the egg.
  • All the blaze powder will be consumed in the process, ensuring the egg’s chance of hatching never exceeds 100%.
