Obsidian Utilities Mod for Minecraft 1.8/1.7.10

With the Obsidian Utilities mod, the shiny, black rocks made by combining lava with water now have more uses than just creating nether portals. In addition to a complete set of tools, including sword, pickaxe, axe, shovel and hoe, the mod also gives players a brand new set of armor. All of the items are a brackish kind of purple-black color, just like the obsidian in game. You don’t just make the gear from raw obsidian though – you need to smelt the bricks you mine into obsidian ingots, which you can then use like ingots of any other metal type.

The armor lasts as long as diamond gear and protects the player just as well, but because obsidian is so much easier to make, you can save all your diamonds for more important uses. Granted, you need to find three diamonds first so you can actually mine the obsidian, but that is infinitely better than finding 24 diamonds to make a full suit of armor. The sword and tools, on the other hand, do not last as long as diamond varieties – they actually have really low durability, so you would be better off using your obsidian to make armor rather than tools.

Beyond that, the Obsidian Utilities mod doesn’t add anything else to the game. It’s a plain and simple mod that gives players more from the resources they’ve already collected, and that’s always nice in Minecraft. It’s not like Obsidian Plus, which implements tools and gear and makes all of it super powerful and durable. If you’re fine with things as they are or don’t mind using Creative mode to get your hand on some diamonds, then you don’t need this mod. On the other hand, if you’re a real Hardcore mode fan and you’re looking for any extra edge you can get on the game, this is a mod you’ll want to check yourself.
