The ClearLagg Bukkit plugin is perhaps one of the most useful add-ons for Minecraft to ever be developed. It is somewhat useful for single player gameplay but absolutely essential for playing online, especially on servers where dozens or even hundreds of people are all connected at the same time. The plugin reduces lag for everyone on a server by changing a few things about Minecraft. Some players despise it because of the short lives it forces on dropped items, but pretty much everyone who has played on a ClearLagg server agrees the plugin is exceptionally useful.
The first and main way the ClearLagg plugin reduces lag is by wiping entities from Minecraft according to a timer which the administrator can set to however long they want. Every X minutes, anything which isn’t held in a player’s inventory or part of the world (like buildings, blocks of all kinds, farms, etc.) will simply be erased. This includes both hostile and friendly mobs, as well as villagers. ClearLagg can totally destroy NPC villages and make them worthless ghost towns, but that’s just the price you have to pay for giving the server a few thousand fewer entities to keep track of, thereby significantly reducing lag.
Of course, besides the timer, you can also tell the ClearLagg plugin exactly what to remove by modifying the attached config file. If you don’t want to get rid of those villagers then keep them by all means – just be ready for RAM and GPU demands to skyrocket when your server has to keep track of hundreds of villages spanning the total area of the world you’re hosting. You also get many easy commands like /lagg for manually controlling the server if you don’t feel like automating the ClearLagg feature. Overall this plugin is useful and easy to use on top of that, making it perfect for use in online Minecraft servers.
