For players seeking a sense of uniformity in their textures, the Pitch Black resource pack might make a nice choice. Though the name might suggest something dark about the pack, the lighting effects work just fine and the world is even a little brighter than usual thanks to the new textures. Some images really benefit from this pack too, like the zombie mobs which are now covered in gore and look ready to rip the player to pieces, or the stained glass blocks and panes which finally look good enough that you might actually want to go through the trouble of making some.
While it manages to shine in some spots, Pitch Black does have its shortcomings. Some textures are simply taken from vanilla Minecraft – or have yet to be updated for this particular pack. You’ll notice chests look exactly the same, which can actually be bothersome when all the blocks around them look different. It should be noted the mod is only about one quarter of the way finished according to the author, so the fact is there probably just isn’t a new texture for chests yet, and there will be by the time this pack is finished.
Thanks to its simple look, the Pitch Black resource pack boasts a meager resolution of 16x. That’s the standard resolution used in Minecraft, so if you can play the game at all you should be able to play it with Pitch Black enabled. Because it’s still so new and so far away from being completed, it’s still kind of early to say anything too bad about Pitch Black. Only time will tell if all the new textures end up looking as good as the ones already featured in the pack.
