If you’re looking for a good, simple resource pack for Minecraft, you’ve found it. The Shockingly Simple pack by GetGabenedHD maintains Minecraft’s standard 16x resolution so yes, the textures do look simple, but they aren’t butt-ugly like some of the stuff you see once you make the transition down to 8x resolution. There are a lot of good things about this pack, but let’s get the bad out of the way first. Shockingly Simple still isn’t finished despite being nearly 6 months old at the time of writing. This is actually kind of funny – how is something simple taking so long to complete? It’s complicated.
While many of the textures which have been changed do look better, it’s not a universal thing. Some plants, especially wheat, are almost unidentifiable with the Shockingly Simple pack enabled. The only way you can really tell what you’re looking at sometimes is the color of the block, item or object. At least those aren’t changed. It’s not all bad though. Some of the textures appear to have increased depth though that’s just not possible given the resolution. Simple dirt stands out quite a bit thanks to its craters and uneven surface. Glass panes and blocks look mottled, rough and more realistic.
Saplings, flowers and other vegetation does actually look pretty good, which is in stark contrast to the vegetables and grains you grow to eat. Basically, Shockingly Simple blurs a lot of the edges on standard Minecraft textures and helps most of them to blend together better. There are some exceptions to this though, and you’ll probably notice them sticking out like a sore thumb from the very first time you lay eyes on them. If you can get past that, this pack is pretty good.
