The story behind the EvilCraft mod is a simple one, but more than enough to explain what’s happening in the mod. After finding an old book with the discoveries of an otherworldly being contained within, you realize you’ve stumbled onto something powerful. The same methods outlined in the book for creating technological advancements can be used by the player to a similar effect. Everything starts with a single piece of dark ore, mined with an iron pickaxe or better, and an apple. By combining those together, you get a darkened apple, which is an instrumental item in this mod.
By feeding the darkened apple to a random friendly mob, you kill the thing. But instead of just flashing red and disappearing in a cloud of smoke like mobs normally do in Minecraft, the slain mob will leave behind a strange anomaly which is sort of like the things you might see while playing the STALKER game series. By throwing a plain old book into this anomaly, you can feed the soul of the slain animal to the book, resulting in the acquisition of more dark knowledge. Once you bring the book alive and gather that knowledge, it will outline the rest of the features of the mod for you.
Now, the EvilCraft mod is pretty cool, but it’s also kind of buggy. The 1.6 version has some compatibility issues with Tinker’s Construct, though these can be fixed by adding a line or two of code to the config file. The fact you can disable just about every single feature of the mod as needed means you probably won’t have to worry about EvilCraft crashing your game or making other mods or plugins bug out. One very annoying feature of EvilCraft is the fact it enables silverfish blocks to spawn in all biomes, but that’s just one bad thing next to all the good this mod does.
