Despite the meager 16x resolution, the Sonic Smooth resource pack really does have some strangely smooth textures. It’s quite surprising when you consider how jagged some of the blocks and items in vanilla Minecraft look normally. Before getting into all the good things about the pack though, it’s important to make one point clear. This resource pack may not work normally with Minecraft versions 1.8.X. It was designed to work on older versions of the game and textures are missing for the newest client. However, rather than just displaying the normal textures, this pack may crash Minecraft instead.
That’s kind of a big inconvenience, but it doesn’t always happen. It also isn’t always an issue since players can just dial back their game version one major update and everything will work just fine. The developer behind the Sonic Smooth resource pack is also working to update it to 1.8.7 actively, so it won’t be very long before it works without any issues whatsoever. Unlike a lot of other resource packs with Sonic in the name, this one has absolutely nothing to do with Sonic the Hedgehog. You’ll find nothing pertaining to the blue critter or any of his friends in this pack, for better or for worse.
Now is a good time to speak about some of the good points about the Sonic Smooth resource pack. Many of the ores look more randomized and dispersed in their images, rather than condensed right into the center of the block. Even without any demanding shader package, shadow effects are also significantly improved over their vanilla Minecraft counterparts. Not all of the textures have been converted yet, so this is probably going to be buggy for most users at present. In a few months though, this pack will be great.
